Shaft Frequency Matching Explained in Plain Terms
"Regular flex" on a label doesn't guarantee two shafts actually flex the same amount — frequency matching is how we check.
Flex labels like regular, stiff, and extra-stiff are a useful starting point, but they're not a precise measurement. Two shafts stamped "stiff" from two different manufacturers can genuinely flex at different rates, and even shafts within the same model can vary slightly club to club.
What Frequency Actually Measures
We clamp a shaft at the grip end, deflect the clubhead end, and measure how fast it oscillates back and forth — that oscillation speed, measured in cycles per minute, is the frequency. A stiffer shaft oscillates faster; a softer one oscillates slower.
Why It Matters Across a Full Set
A well-built iron set should step up in frequency by a consistent amount from wedge to long iron — typically somewhere in the range of 4 to 5 cycles per minute between each club. When that progression is uneven, one or two clubs in the set can feel noticeably different at transition points in the swing, even though every shaft on paper says the same flex.
Frequency matching doesn't change what flex you play. It confirms every club in your set is actually delivering that flex consistently.
How We Use It on the Bench
Before a new set goes together, every shaft gets measured and, where needed, trimmed to bring the whole set into a consistent progression. It's a five-minute check that prevents a much longer conversation later about why one particular iron "feels off" compared to the rest of the bag.
Does This Apply to Wedges and Woods Too?
Less critically, since those clubs aren't usually swung in a tight progression the way irons are. We still check individual shafts against their stated spec, but full-set frequency stepping is mainly an iron-set concern.
