Copper Tick Marks and What Tempo Actually Costs You

The tick-mark readout on our bench panel isn't decoration — it's a tempo ratio, and it moves before your ball flight ever does.

Golfers tend to talk about tempo in vague terms — "smooth," "quick," "rushed" — without a number attached. On the bench, tempo is measured directly as a ratio between backswing time and downswing time, and that number turns out to predict a surprising amount of what shows up in your dispersion pattern.

What the Ratio Actually Means

Most efficient swings land somewhere close to a 3:1 ratio — roughly three units of time taken going back for every one unit coming down. Ratios that drift well past that, especially on the fast side, usually point to a rushed transition from the top.

Why a Rushed Transition Costs You Accuracy Before Distance

A quick transition doesn't necessarily cost clubhead speed — sometimes it adds it. What it tends to cost is sequencing: the body and the club arriving at impact slightly out of order, which shows up as inconsistent face angle more than as lost yardage.

Two swings with nearly identical clubhead speed can produce very different dispersion patterns once tempo ratio is factored in — speed isn't the whole story.

How We Use It in a Fitting

Tempo ratio doesn't change what club we recommend directly, but it does change how we read your dispersion data. A wide pattern paired with an unusually fast ratio points toward a timing issue worth mentioning, rather than assuming the equipment is the only variable in play.
